1 2 3 4

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, artists used self-portraiture to break away from realistic representation and explore internal emotional states. Vincent van Gogh used frantic brushstrokes and intense colors to communicate his turbulent mental health and inner torment. Soon after, Frida Kahlo redefined the genre by blending Mexican folk art with surrealism, using her own image to confront physical pain, heartbreak, and cultural identity, proving that the artist’s body could serve as a canvas for collective and personal trauma.
