Throughout art history, roosters and chickens have evolved from potent religious symbols into celebrated subjects of everyday life. In ancient Roman mosaics and Greek pottery, the rooster was often linked to gods like Apollo and Athena, embodying vigilance, courage, and the dawn of a new day. By the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the bird took on a strong Christian meaning, representing repentance and watchfulness due to its role in the biblical story of Peter’s denial. However, the golden age for these birds arrived during the 17th century with the rise of Dutch Golden Age realism. Painters like Melchior d’Hondecoeter specialized in meticulous, dramatic depictions of poultry yards, transforming humble farm animals into grand, dynamic subjects worthy of fine art. In modern art, the motif shifted again, with artists like Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso utilizing the rooster’s sharp, expressive silhouette as a vibrant symbol of raw vitality, fertility, or national pride.
