In the mid-20th century, abstract expressionists fundamentally redefined what it meant to “work” on a canvas. Rather than standing neatly before an easel, Jackson Pollock unrolled raw canvas directly onto his barn floor in Long Island, moving around and over it like a dancer. Using hardened brushes, sticks, and basting syringes, he dripped and flung commercial liquid paint from all sides. For Pollock and the action painters, the finished masterpiece was simply a physical record of the raw, energetic movement that took place during its creation.
